MIXING/BLENDING/DILUTION

NEOLUBE® NO. 2 is supplied in a Ready-For-Use form. MIX UNIFORMLY PRIOR TO USE. If dilution is required, use isopropanol (or equivalent) to the consistency required by the application method chosen. NEOLUBE® NO. 2 is intended for spray application, however, application by brush, dip or roller can be used. Always mix uniformly just prior to use.

Typical film thickness ranges from 0.2 to 0.5 mil (5-12 microns). A coating of 1 mil (25 microns) of NEOLUBE® NO. 2 is best built up by the application of 5 coats of 0.2 mil thickness by spray application.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Substrates to be coated must be clean and dry. A solvent wipe with air dry is sufficient for smooth surfaces. For porous surfaces, use the same procedure followed by heating to drive off entrapped contaminants, solvents or moisture.

Although, used in the same manner as paint, it is a lubricant, hence why it is a non-oily residue – perfect for moving parts that you don’t want to mess up. It is also formulated to cure without the use of heat or activators. Higher temperatures will speed cure; lower temperatures will retard the curing process.

2. As a paint, it shines

If furnished, your model train will shine like polished steel with its use. Due to its adhesive technical properties, Neolube will not chemically blacken or harm your model train.

Note: It should be tested on surfaces first to ensure this. Optimum results will be obtained on clean fittings.

3. It is easy to touch up

If mistakes occur, Neolube can be rubbed off with effort. Cured products can be removed with a combination of soaking in a solvent and mechanical abrasion such as a wire brush. If touch-ups are needed, simply paint more Neolube over it and the model train will be as good as new.

4. It helps moving parts run smoothly

As a dry lubricant, it can be used on valve gears, rods, and their joints to help the moving parts to run smoothly.

5. It is non-corrosive

Ideal for its non-corrosive properties, Neolube has an advantage for model trains with regard to maintenance and longevity as it prevents seizing, fretting, galling, and resists abrasion.

6. It is durable

Neolube will provide a 40-year service life at ambient temperature not exceeding 122°F (50°C). It can be safely used to seal threaded pipe joints for approximately 1-year at a temperature of 250°F (131°C). Under non-nuclear (standard radiation) environments, the thermal stability of the sealant can be expected at temperatures up to 400°F. It contains no directly added Lead, Zinc, Mercury, Antimony, or Copper where such elements are leachable or could be released by the breakdown of the sealant under expected environmental conditions.

There are several industrial applications in which conductive lubricants are necessary. These specialized lubricants can serve one of two purposes: either to ensure that an electrical circuit remains closed and functional while protecting the two metal parts in contact with one another, or to offset static discharge that might be harmful to a machine system. In the latter case, the lubricant typically serves as a ground, allowing static discharge to pass through a machine part instead of building up, arcing and causing pitting which accelerates wear and tear.

Nuclear lubricants with conductive properties

In either case, especially in the nuclear industry, the choice of lubricant usually includes – either as a main constituent or additive – chemical compounds with naturally high levels of conductivity. Molybdenum disulfide is one example of a natural semi-conductor that serves the purpose, while also conforming to the various tribological parameters of nuclear systems.

Neolube® No. 2

While there are many conductive lubricants used in other industries, such is in the automotive design and even the production of printers, the stringent requirements of the nuclear industry mean that lubricants with conductive properties must be suitable for use under extreme temperature and pressure. An example of this is Huron Industries’ Neolube® No. 2, a dry film lubricant used in nuclear applications as an anti-seize compound, thread lubricant, or for lubricating moving parts and rubbing surfaces. Aside from its high lubricity and provision of clean, long-wearing lubrication, it also acts as a resistance coating to provide conductivity and release properties to non-conductive substrates. Its conductivity is variable, making it versatile and suitable for use on various surfaces and in a range of tribological systems.

Huron Industries manufactures a range of nuclear lubricants – including conductive lubricants – for use in power generators and other nuclear facilities. Contact us for more information on our products.
